Sociologias is published three times a year by the Post-Graduation Program in Sociology (PPG/Sociologia) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), intending to promote interchange between national and foreign social scientists. The journal was published two times a year until 2009.

The abbreviated title of the journal is Sociologias, which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and legends.

The periodical Sociologias grew from the idea of an increasing need for spaces to disseminate the knowledge produced in the University, both to circulate information and works of research within the scientific community and to inform the society, establishing communication channels.

Sociologias is published in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, right in the Cone Sul of South America. Its editorial proposal was born from the understanding that in a world more interconnected than ever by new information and communication technologies it is increasingly necessary to disseminate works of research and stimulate the debate in the scientific community within the field of the social sciences. Our team aims to do so in accordance with the requirements of a social and scientific context that imposes new criteria of publishing quality, graphical presentation, and distribution.

Sociologias was created to replace Cadernos de Sociologia, a periodical that for 10 years published the work of professors and researchers in the field of the social sciences at UFRGS. However, Cadernos was outdated as to the requirements of the social and scientific context, both in relation to the academic criteria and those of the promotion agencies, and to technical issues and graphical presentation. Thus, a new publishing and graphical project was prepared for the periodical, with the purpose fulfilling the conditions and current requirements of the field. Its publishing project takes into consideration two main points: one is a thematic, specific dossier present in each issue, the other a diversified section that includes scientific articles and theoretical-methodological updates, summaries, research notes, photographs, and interviews.

Sociologias is a periodical with a pluralistic orientation that intends to expand the space available to the manifestation of the diverse existing currents in the field of social sciences, at the same time that it puts in debate issues and approaches that constitute Sociology. The periodical also offers opportunities to areas such as literature, computer science, and economy, among others, which present important interfaces with sociology. The periodical is open to contributions from all countries. Sociologias has a diversified editorial team, both in what concerns the regions of Brazil and international advisers. It is published biannually and has excellent perspectives of continuing, since it has a structure of its own. Besides having revenue from its own sales, the magazine is financially supported by the Research Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (PROPESQ-UFRGS) and the National Council of Scientific and Technologic Development (CNPQ.)
