Focusing the painting "Caipira picando fumo" [Peasant cutting tobacco], this article analyses the work of the Brazilian painter Almeida Júnior (1850-1899). The author discusses the way the artist depicted the social environment, nature, human types and regional peculiarities. He then questions the idea of nationality in Juniors work, marked by instabilities of form which carry on a dialogue with the critical tradition of Naturalist determinism.
