Engaging nanotechnologies: a case study of 'upstream' public engagement

This paper develops an analysis of the factors likely to shape future public responses to the social and ethical dimensions of emerging nanotechnologies. The research was designed to offer insight into the following: what sorts of issues are likely under current circumstances to shape public attitudes towards nanotechnologies; what narrative resources do people draw upon to develop their thinking; how do public attitudes evolve through social interaction and knowledge generation; and to what extent can expressed concerns be understood as emblematic of wider societal dilemmas.

Este artigo desenvolve uma análise dos fatores suscetíveis de moldarem as respostas futuras do público frente às dimensões sociais e éticas das nanotecnologias emergentes. A pesquisa foi construída para oferecer insights sobre as seguintes questões: quais os tipos de questões capazes, nas circunstâncias atuais, de moldar as atitudes do público sobre nanotecnologias; quais as fontes de narrativas em torno das quais as pessoas desenvolvem seu pensamento; como as atitudes do público evoluem através da interação social e geração de conhecimento; e até que ponto as preocupações manifestadas podem ser entendidas como emblemáticas de dilemas societais maiores.

The other side of the agricultural frontier: a brief history on origin and decline of Indian agriculture in cerrado

Frederic Jakson Turner's thesis that frontiers had forged the American nature, ascending to private life through the development of democracy and economy, did not inspire Latin American critical studies because here the reality showed the other side of the frontier: a space to which dynamic centers' social conflicts were purged and exacerbated, as well described by Otávio Velho. In this process, the first confronts usually did not occur between the migrating population and the workers hired by the absent land owner, but between all people and the Indians. A lot has been written about these conflicts, but the focus is always the one more drastic and urgent: genocide. However, little is said about the subsidiary decline, that is, the decline of agricultural processes. This is even truer when we talk about the Cerrado Domain. This paper aims to offer a very short history of Indians' agriculture origin and decline in Cerrado.

Pouco, entretanto, se discorre sobre o declínio subsidiário, ou seja, o dos processos agrícolas. Isso é ainda mais verdadeiro quando se trata do Domínio do Cerrado. o presente artigo pretende oferecer uma brevíssima história da origem e declínio da agricultura dos índios no Cerrado.

Who owns the rural space? Changes in the society/nature relationship and the emergence of the rural space public dimension

An important change is currently taking place in the rural world, which is no longer seen just as private space, but as public. This results from changes verified in the relationship between society and nature. The subject matter of this paper is the analysis of such transformations and their effects over rural development policies in the rural area of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, State of Paraná, Brazil.

Uma mudança importante sobre o mundo rural se observa atualmente: ele deixou de ser visto apenas como um espaço privado para ganhar ares de espaço público. Isto é resultado da própria mudança verificada na relação entre sociedade e natureza. Essas mudanças e suas implicações para as políticas de desenvolvimento rural consistem o objeto de debate neste trabalho, que tem como lócus o rural metropolitano de Curitiba (PR).
